What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a training approach that utilizes computerized equipment and sensors to measure, record and display physical events in the body, which are then converted into visual or auditory signals in order to enhance self-perception.  Biofeedback can measure muscle activity (sEMG), heat rate and heart rate variability (HRV), temperature of skin, sweat gland activity (EDA), blood pressure, and brain wave activity (EEG).  This information allows clients to learn to control their body and mind in order to optimize health and wellbeing, enhance training and performance, and speed recovery.  Biofeedback streamlines rehabilitation and athletic training by involving the client in the learning process and by objectively identifying specific physiologic areas that require attention.  Biofeedback is also a well recognized treatment approach for rehabilitation in assocation with physical therapy, physiatry and psychology.

Two main goals of biofeedback are to:

  • enhance awareness
  • improve self-regulation and self-control of the body
